The city of Stuart emerges as the next location for Brightline’s new $60 million train station, with a ceremonial event scheduled for March

Brightline has announced plans to construct a new station in Stuart, marking a significant development for the Treasure Coast region. The city of Stuart emerged as the chosen location for this new addition, with plans to situate the station downtown, close to the Martin County Courthouse. The decision was communicated to city officials on Monday, with City Manager Mike Mortell relaying the news to city staff.

While an official announcement from Brightline is pending, a ceremonial event is scheduled for March 11 at 8 a.m. at the future site on Southeast Flagler Avenue.

The project, estimated to cost $60 million, will see financial contributions from both the city and county, totaling $45 million, alongside Brightline's investment. The chosen site at 500 SE Flagler Ave. will be donated by the county to the city, which in turn will lease it to Brightline for a nominal fee of $1 a year over an 80-year lease.

The selection process saw five property owners vying for the station, with three locations, including the chosen site in Stuart, being publicly disclosed. The other two sites were in downtown Fort Pierce, one of which was proposed behind the Sunrise Theatre and involved using a county-owned parking structure.

Support for the Fort Pierce proposals was strong among local government officials, with Fort Pierce making a notable effort to attract Brightline, including signage and a dedicated podcast named “Next Stop Fort Pierce.”
